Chapter Two

Pg. 29 "I have only been drunk twice in my life the second time was that afternoon"

I am unsure as to why Nick had put this in the book. The only I can think of is the he had wanted to make people feel bad for him with whatever happened. If the alcohol clouded his judgement or if it happened under the influence, then he wasn't sure as to what all happened when he was under the influence of alcohol.

Pg. 33 " It's really his wife that's keeping them apart. She's a Catholic, and they don't believe in divorce."

When Nick and Catherine are talking about how Tom or Myrtle can't stand who each other is married to, nick finds out that everyone thinks Daisy is a Catholic and that's why they haven't gotten a divorce yet. Come to find out Daisy really isn't a catholic tom just really doesn't want to marry Myrtle he just wants her on the side. If he leaves Daisy he also loses all of the money that he got when they got married.

Pg. 34 "I thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn't fit to lick my shoe."

When Myrtle says this about her husband Mr. Wilson.  She doesn't like who she married at all. Like never loved him. When she only wanted to marry him because she wanted children, but Mr. Wilson can't or wont give her children. When she feels like Tom could give her the perfect children because Tom gave Daisy a perfect little child.

Pg. 37 " Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand."

Tom told Myrtle to stop saying Daisy's name. She insisted on still doing it. so she said Daisy a couple more times and then Tom just hit her. Daisy is the only one who can make Tom less of a top dog. Myrtle just wants to do it because she wan't to be top dog when she is with tom when that really isn't going to happen at all.

  1. Re "only drunk once" - perhaps it is to show the reader that we can trust his observations.

Besides the physical relationship, what else does Myrtle give Tom that Daisy doesnt?

Question: Myrtle's comment about her husband sounds to me like something Daisy might have felt if she had married Gatsby all those years ago.

Your observation of Tom hitting Myrtle is spot on!
