Chapter One

Response One.

Pg. 9. " her face was sad and lovely with bright things in it,"

---When he starts to describe the way that Daisy looks he describes her as sad and lovely. I don't know if you can put sad and lovely into the same sentence. She may have this sad beauty to the way she looks or she could just not be happy and he is the one noticing this. He also says that she has bright things in it. So she can't really be the sad can she. People think that being sad is beautiful, that could be what he is meaning.

Response Two.

Pg.1 "whenever you feel like criticizing anyone.. just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."

---This quote could be about anything. He could have just said "yeah go ahead judge everyone" but he didn't. As a person you can't judge someone by how poor they are if you have more money than them. If someone has better clothes than another you don't just shun them away and never talk to them again. You can't judge someone because you have no idea what they have been through just like they don't know what you yourself has been through.

Response Three.
Pg. 11 "In two weeks it'll be the longest day in the year... Do you always watch for the longest day of the year and then miss it? I always watch for the longest day in the year and then miss it."

---The thought of wanting to see something so bad that you wait a long time for it and then just out of the blue you forget about it even though you obsessed about it for so long. It amazes me that us as people can let anything slip our minds even though we always talk about it and wait for it. If you keep telling yourself you want to do a certain thing eventually your brain is just going to get tired and block it out completely. We can't obsess over everything thing or our  brain wont remember a thing.

Response Four.
Pg.21 "When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and i was alone again in the unquiet darkness."

---When he says unquiet darkness I get the sense that even though he is alone he just needs to have peace and quiet. With the way that he is, it could be extremely hard to do. From personal experience the whole world around me could be deadly silent and i could just hear screaming and everything. The voices that talk just never shut up. You can never have peace and quiet even if you wanted to. It just gets overwhelming.

  1. Re: Sad and lovely...it could mean that even though she is sad, she still might look lovely.

I doubt Gatsby like peace and quiet, especially when we see how loud his parties get :)

Judging: Is it ok to judge someone once you have gotten to know them or considered their experiences?
